| Cardio & building muscle To cut a long story short, I've got to get fit so I'm doing cardio every day apart from weekends (either running for 1/2 hour or swiming for an hour).
I'm still doing weights 3 times per week as usual, but is this cardio going to stop me building muscle or will it just slow it down? To be honest I think I look smaller/thinner now after doing it for a few weeks and I definitely weigh less, but I'm hoping that's just down to me losing fat rather than wasting away.
There are quite a few blokes where I train who are well built but also really lean and pretty fit judging by what I've seen them doing on the treadmill, so it must be possible to have both a good physique and good fitness, but I'm still worried that I'm going to end up looking like a scrawny distance runner |

| Re: Cardio & building muscle I'm focus only in building muscle. chest, back etc. my goal is focus only in building muscle not in cardio now. after that i'll move my goal to buil muscles in my stomach and after that i'll concentrate in weight loss.

| Re: Cardio & building muscle Tom & Baz, when you say "cardio" do you mean heart rate around 135bpm with the aim of fat burning or heart rate near the 160's bpm associated more with running?

| Re: More Protien Build Your Muscles Gains,
you said you worried that you going to end up looking like a scrawny distance runner. it doesn't have to be like this if you will persist
everyday eating excess than you eating today. i mean eating more protein
will build your muscles.

| Re: Cardio & building muscle I generally stick between 125-135 for morning cardio.
Normally I do 40 minutes fast walking

| Re: Cardio & building muscle Just avoid moderate to long duration at moderately elevated HR....eg running for an hour. Either do moderate duration low intensity (eg Tom and his 40mins fast walking) if getting / keeping lean whilst building LBM is the goal, or do some very high intensity short duration stuff (high intensity interval training (HIIT) or Tabata work if maintaining / increasing conditioning whilst gaining LBM is the goal. If doing the latter total work time should be less than 20 minutes.

Resistance training and HIIT would be fine....

| I am (scrawny vegan) runner who also wants to put on some bulk. I always take isotonic drink and/or carb gels on runs over one hour and eat / take protein when I get home. I am training for a marathon (doing it on Saturday) but I am still gaining weight (although this week I stayed the same - need to eat a bit more!!)
I weight train three times a week and eat lots!
Last year I did the Wilmslow Half-Marathon and there was a seriously big body-builder who was also running faster than me!

| Re: Cardio & building muscle I do cardio (well walking the dog) 3x a day, every day and if anything it helped me gain weight. Cardio gives you a big apetite boost. Also helps keep the bodyfat down.

| Re: Cardio & building muscle Sound, cheers lads.
I'll stick at it then and just make sure I focus on higher intensity for shorter duration, and that I stick to my diet so my body doesn't start to cannibalise itself through glucogenosis. |
