![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Cardio & building muscle To cut a long story short, I've got to get fit so I'm doing cardio every day apart from weekends (either running for 1/2 hour or swiming for an hour). I'm still doing weights 3 times per week as usual, but is this cardio going to stop me building muscle or will it just slow it down? To be honest I think I look smaller/thinner now after doing it for a few weeks and I definitely weigh less, but I'm hoping that's just down to me losing fat rather than wasting away. There are quite a few blokes where I train who are well built but also really lean and pretty fit judging by what I've seen them doing on the treadmill, so it must be possible to have both a good physique and good fitness, but I'm still worried that I'm going to end up looking like a scrawny distance runner ![]() |

![]() | Gains, you said you worried that you going to end up looking like a scrawny distance runner. it doesn't have to be like this if you will persist everyday eating excess than you eating today. i mean eating more protein will build your muscles. |

Either do moderate duration low intensity (eg Tom and his 40mins fast walking) if getting / keeping lean whilst building LBM is the goal, or do some very high intensity short duration stuff (high intensity interval training (HIIT) or Tabata work if maintaining / increasing conditioning whilst gaining LBM is the goal. If doing the latter total work time should be less than 20 minutes.

| Do or do not. There is no 'try'. | I am (scrawny vegan) runner who also wants to put on some bulk. I always take isotonic drink and/or carb gels on runs over one hour and eat / take protein when I get home. I am training for a marathon (doing it on Saturday) but I am still gaining weight (although this week I stayed the same - need to eat a bit more!!) I weight train three times a week and eat lots! Last year I did the Wilmslow Half-Marathon and there was a seriously big body-builder who was also running faster than me! Last edited by MrGum; 11-05-2008 at 09:12 AM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Cardio & building muscle Sound, cheers lads. I'll stick at it then and just make sure I focus on higher intensity for shorter duration, and that I stick to my diet so my body doesn't start to cannibalise itself through glucogenosis. |
