Using bench alone

When using the bench press yesterday I suddenly ran out of power on the end of my last set and couldn't push the bar up to the part it rests on... so it was stuck on me haha. I had to shout for some guy next to me to get it off.

I kinda like to work to failure. How can I get around this?

Re: Using bench alone

I use smith as I train alone cracking because I know you should be able to hold the bar in position for a few seconds in which you just let go or twist

hehe no matter what the weight, more or less if you train alone working to failure with a BB can be very awkward and dangerous followed by humiliation

but yeh dude DB as you can just drop them or train with a mate to spot you

the only problem i have with DB press is the fact of getting them into position, unlike the BB its supported

either way dude, id get a spotter for both motivation and safety

Re: Using bench alone

i flick db's straight up off my thighs as I lean back... works for me up until about 45kgs!

but yeah training partner can push you to push out an extra rep...or two. helps you to stay consistant aswel:beer1:

Re: Using bench alone

just get a spotter !! No point going to smith machine ,
you want to be using free weights mostly mate !!
always dumbells are good, also would advice a spotter , soo when u go heavier you can squeeze out a few extra reps !!

Re: Using bench alone

Hmm a spotter is not possible, most people in the gym I currently go wouldn't spot for me, seems that way and I don't like the idea of relying on a stranger everytime anyway.

I think for now a quick fix will be to just roll it off my body while I'm at low weight or something, later on though im gonna be stuck

I'm still getting my program together so I'm probably doing this wrong but at the moment I'm doing bench press and after that I do dumb bell inc chest press anyway.

So to use dumb bells is just taking an excercise out of my routine.

Hmm, maybe i'll invest in a friend to go with when I get on heavier weights then.

Ok , I'll hit on the bold one's first as they stand out to be more important at first glance. Continueing to use the bar without a spotter with the plan to roll it off you is complete and utter nonsense. Good luck trying to roll it off your throat, breathing is essentual to life...If you are lucky enough to be able to avoid that you could easily break a rib or at minimum cause contusions rolling it down your rib cage and the weight of the bar being put straight across your abdomin could result in internal injuries as the bar's weight will not be evenlly distributed.

If your concerned with missing out on a chest exercise simply replace with another DB exercise such as fly's.

I'm only guessing that your jumping to the conclusion that no one will spott you. Have you even bothered to ask anyone ? It will only take a second to ask someone and if they say no you've lost nothing but on the flip side you may gain a training partner who may be willing to meet with you on a regular basis. If you don't ask you won't know, there is no reason not to as it is common practice to ask for a spot in every gym I've been to. Most ppl take rest inbetween sets so your not really inconvienacing them.

If you take nothing else from my post please re-think your choice of BB press without a spotter because I would like to get to know you but you have to be around awhile in order for that to happen...anyways, good luck with your training hope to read your post soon...

if no one in your gym is willing to spot you, then change gyms. I would,nt want to train round people like that anyway!!!!!

Re: Using bench alone

Use DBs. Don't train to failure if training on your own. You are simply asking for an injury.
