![]() ![]() | Smith machine close grip press(no bench) Saw a lad working tri's today using a close grip bench press technique but instead of doing these the way I normally do using the flat bench he was doing these lying direct on the floor, never seen this done before, didn't have the chance to ask him but is there any benefit to doing them this way??? |

| is 6 weeks out from his winners massage not the kind itraininthedark had lol | Re: Smith machine close grip press(no bench) the only thing i can think of is that i might keep more of the tension on the tricep as your arms cant go all the way back.. so not involving the chest as much... i've never seen it done either...but thats my guess...

Fairly common amongs powerlifters wishing to improve their top end (lockout) strength, especially those that compete using a bench shirt and find the mid-range to lockout to be the sticking point. Also fairly common with throwers and the like. Typically you'd do em with the free bar set low in a power rack, or with DB's. Similar movements would be board presses, foam presses and rack lockouts. I see these somewhat specialist exercises feeding down , often from people who know and understand their uses to people who "saw a big guy in the gym doing it" and copy them without knowing what they are doing or why. Good call on asking "what's that" before you try it ![]() Cheers, G |
