Re: bent over rows

barbells rows is probably my weakest exercise,at the moment i've rowed 50kgs 5x5 strict form at a moderate speed keeping my body tight and still as possible,im pretty sure i'll be able to hit 60kgs 5x5 with the same form, but anything above that's going to take a bit of time.i have never been strong at any type of freeweight rowing, rowing on the hammerstrength machine sitting down using no momentum i am a lot stronger on i think i don't have a good body shape to row but hey check your ego at the door,i'd do any compound at a light weight and use the mind muscle connection than use heavy weights bouncing and momentum.

I mean the poundages, now practise pulling the weight up and then down but concentrate on "feeling" the movement in the mid back area, as you lower you should be able to feel it under your arms as your lats take the weight. Than pull back up, and like the lads have said, squeeze at the top and contract the trap/mid back area.

Its not easy to do when you first start training, but the mind-muscle connection is something everyone should try and do, even at home, with no weight, just visualise doing it and "feel" the area your training. Your arms on this exercise are merely for going from point A to point B, nothing else. It can work for everything.

After you get used to it, you'll be able to concentrate and block out your arms feeling tired, just 110% focus on that back contracting, and one hell of a pump too.
I love the mind muscle thing, I get a picture of what is required and feel the muscles required working. I do it and get the odd funny look from my fellow gym goers(mostly yanks!). I also do it to excess when playing golf!

Re: bent over rows

Has anyone ever tried lying down (face down) on an inclined bench? i have seen a few guys do it this way in the gym, just looks a bit awkward to me

Sounds like you got it though mate, I think it takes a bit of practise but well worth it.
