Deadlift problem

I've always wondered how to deadlift when you're tall?! I'm 6'5 and when I go down for the weight my knees are well over the bar.

In order to get the weight up the barbell has to go over the knees and therefore more lower back comes into play on the initial part rather than the legs.

I have carefully crafted a diagram below to explain this problem to those of you who are of 'female' height

Do any tall deadlifters have any knowledge of getting around this??

Re: Deadlift problem

You could try to raise the weights up on blocks... that might help... even a few inches would do it...

Re: Deadlift problem

Being taller is often an advantage in the DL, short guys, with short arms normally have the most trouble clearing the knees.

Without seeing your form, it is hard for me to say, but I would bet your form is to blame.

I see you are in Kent, you could go to Dave Mannerings in Maidstone, who is a top powerlifter, or Ministry of Muscle in Aylesford, and ask in there, someone would be able to have a look at your form and give you some pointers.

I am about 6'2 by the way, so of full male height, and have a half decent pull,

Nods ^^, unless you have unproportionally short arms (seeing the picture you do :P) there shouldn't be problems..

Re: Deadlift problem

PMSL @ your diagram. Reps for that

Anyhow, as Ntyol said probably a form problem, or possible a flexability problem??

Do you have tight hams, achilles heels ?

Cheers for that, I will check it out. New to the area - I'm googling 'Dave Mannering' as we speak.

Re: Deadlift problem

Hi Tall fans

I'm 6ft 6in bud.

Us extra tall lads need to deadlift slightly differently.

Have you tried deadlifting Sumo style? I've done this before and it was working for a while: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QEyDlJP6Hc

I now almost squat behind the bar and use a bit more leg power to get the bar off the floor like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK4UIxKIxtc

but I go a little bit lower like this:

I had my form checked by a guy called Chris Pike (ex-Powerlifter, now Nabba BB'er) and we basically spent an hour trying out almost every form option to see what worked for me....

And as ever thats the answer for every thing - keep trying things until you find out what works for you.

Re: Deadlift problem

LOL at that short guy doing sumos.

A healthy weight but the times the bar had bended it was only 2 inches off the ground.

Re: Deadlift problem

Most times, the shorter guys get on better with sumo than the taller lifters, but there are always exceptions.

If you have a look on here, you should find Dave's details

Look under user name 'French Connection' if not

Re: Deadlift problem

Cheers TH&S. I will have a look at the youtube clips.

Getting it off the floor and past shins is where the probelm is.

I can see on your pic that the bar is very close to your shins. The bar acts as a cheese slicer for the skin on my shins if I come up from that position - have the scabs to prove. urrgh. ;-)
