Pain in lower back when performing ab excersises

for as long as i can remember i have been getting a bad pain in the middle of my lower back when ever i start doing an ab excersise such as cruches or lying leg raises

i usually can only get up to about 10 reps when the pain start to kick in and i have to stop. it usually subsides straight away and i dont feel pain at any other time of the day.

however there are some ab excersises which dont seem to affect my back as much. for instance i can do cruches on an inflatible swiss ball no problem, or hanging leg raises. however id like to expand my training to new excersises.

It seems that i am only affected by excersises where i am lying on the flat of my back, which is pretty much the majority of ab excersises!

any idea what might be causing this, or how i can eleviate the pain?

Re: Pain in lower back when performing ab excersises

You'll be bending in the wrong place more than likely. Sometimes if you have stiff hips for example you'll bend slightly higher than you should which may cause problems. Concentrate on your form, but as a rule avoid any exercise that hurts - it's as simple as that.

Just out of interest - you aren't putting your hands behind your head or anything like that are you? True also mentioned something - how far are you coming up. As I said, look at your form.

If you want to get to the route of the problem (which I'd suggest you do) I'd see a physio. Doubtful that the NHS will provide you with one unless your complaint is constant and stops you working - so you may have to stump up the $$$ yourself.

Re: Pain in lower back when performing ab excersises

You say the problem comes when your laying flat....do you flatten your lower back by tilting your pelvis so you reduce your natural arc.....

its easy and common practice for many to increase the arc when performing certain floor based ab excercises - this can increase chances of potential strains?

only come up until you can still feel the tension in your abs, any further and its too much. put ur hands to the side of your head or across your chest not behind your head. use a roller if you need to.

Re: Pain in lower back when performing ab excersises

Also do you workout your lower back at all? I had a similar problem when getting back into training but after a few weeks of deadlifts and hyper-extensions the problem has gone...
