    best foot position for squats

What is the best knee position for squats for your knees,so as to not injure them or to not reinjure them if you have a previous injury there ,and to protect your hips too?
Is it feet forward at about shoulder width or feet pointing out at shoulder width or wider ?
    Thanks in advance guys ..

Re: best foot position for squats

There is the olympic squat where ideally flexibility not being an issue would have your feet pointing straight ahead with a high bar position and this would hit the quads better. The wide stance is more a power lifter style it hits the hamstrings better and i think the stance is wider for two reasons to accommodate the gear being used and reduce the bar travel.

Because everyone is different in flexibility you will have to find a bar position and foot distance for yourself and work in to the ideal setup.

The olympic squat is suppose to be very safe for knees regardless of the knees going ahead of the feet. Bodybuilders do quarter squats to hit the quads even more so but from reading, the olympic squat takes the pressure off the knees from going full range where as any squat form finishing parallel or higher can increase the pressure. Just don't bounce the squat and you wont strain anything.

Power lifting squat goes parallel but maybe the form they use takes away the strain on the knees however i wouldn't know.

Feet position is important while squatting. If you have your feet facing forward and keeping them shoulder width apart you will work the middle and outer quads. If you have your feet wider and pointing out you will work your inner quads. If you need more free advice then please get in contact. Scott

Mmm. Not sure on some of the advice here.

To protect your knees you need to make sure your HIPS are working correctly.

It matters very little if a narrow, medium or wide stance is used on knee valgus - what matter is if the hip and ankle are mobile enough to allow full movement.

Good technique is everything - so is good mobility.

I cant squat with my feet close together. I use quite a wide stance.

I find a wider stance better as it allows me to squat deeper and heavier.

I don't feel brave enough to set up a video shot of me in a commercial gym showing off my squats (cos that is what its going to look like)

    Squat like your sh*tting outside...

Wide feet - cheeks to the floor!
