Standing Leg Curls

I've got a sciatic problem & therefore am trying not to do heavy (for me) SLDL's or Romanians. As an alternative hamstring exercise I had a go on the lying leg curl machine, which seemed ok, but my gym have since ditched it, togther with the old seated leg curl machine, & brought in a sh!tty seated machine that threatens to remove your knee caps if you try & contract your hams fully.

As a consequence of the above I thought I'd try some standing leg curls, & as this is a compound move I thought it would be an exellent alternative.

I tried doing them today, but they felt terrible. I struggled not to thrust my @rse backwards & couldn't contract my ham fully for the final 1/3 of the movement. The weight was not very high so I'm wondering if this is just a flexibility issue or do I have seriously weak hams?

Next week I might try the Ninepack slow lifting method, with an even lower weight & very strict form, or I might try them lying on my back, however I'm starting to think that the exercise might be a waste of time.

I did try light SLDL's with a shrug at the top, & these felt 'productive' so maybe I should stick with these?

What about the sciatic problem - any suggestions?

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on the above I'd be very grateful to hear them.
