![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | panthro no offense buddy but you have been weightlifting fanatically for a number of years judging by the size of you, these "geeks" are normally starters in the gym. Just cas you are a little more knowledgeable and determined than other people doesnt mean that they are geeks. Im not small and not big by any means but if i was small, i would'nt want the more experienced massive guys thinking that about me. I just dont think "geeks" are the right word to guys that are begiinning bodybuilding, i have introduced a couple of my mates to it and they arnt geeks jsut cas they use smithy to learn their limits etc. This is not a go at you panthro, just think the word "geeks" and the concept of the towel rail is'nt right.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hey bro don't worry about it, Panthro is just venting his feelings at the Smith machine, and TBH I agree with him. I'm not a big guy (5'8" 182lbs) but I make sure I train hard using the big compound movements, although I cannot match the big guys in my gym when it comes to exercises like the bench press or barbell curl, but I fancy my chances of at least matching the big guys at the squat and deadlift (having said that none of them over do them anyway) The Smith machine really is a useless bit of kit. It lets you think you are stronger than you actually are and it's limited range of motion does not allow 'core' stabilizer muscles to develop which leads to and undeveloped physique and injury. You don't have to be a big guy to get my respect, as long as you train hard using heavy olympic exercises on a regular basis then you are not a geek in my book. A guy can weigh 250lbs, have 18" biceps and a 50" chest but unless he has the commitment to do ass-busting, nauseating, head-spinning heavy squats or deadlifts every week then he is as much of a geek as any beginner. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I use the smith machine some times for shrugs. I do notice alot of guys use it for their bench, incline and military presses. I know that they use it because the bar is counterweighted or something the bar feels like 0 lbs. So the guys use it for bench when they cant do a plate on the bar. So they use the smith machine and use like a plate or so which would be really like 100 lbs. I do use the smith machine sometimes for behind the neck military press. I do them really slow and deep but this does bother my shoulder some but gives it a good pump. I would not use the smith for squats as you have a natural groove and you wont follow that groove following the path that the bar is going. In fact if your bar does not follow the path then your body will and this is just asking for injury. I would use the cage (when you heal up) go light and get some good form down. Have some guys watch you that do squats and have them tell you what you are doing. It is hard to look into the mirror and see what you are supposed to be doing because you should be looking up while squatting. Have a mate check your form. You can use the bars to make a stopping spot for the bar and you wont have the problem you had before. You will get better legs with the free weight than the other anyway. Hope you get better bro.
