try deadlift, deadlifts and more deadlifts... awesome for lower back and everyothermuscle in your back for that matter... im not a fan of good mornings personally, i see them as a good way to pick up an injury..

Great advice by Panthro and jock.
You could do some situps too as this also helps to support the back as well.

Personally i don't find sit ups work my lower back (only the abs) but here are some exercises which work for me:

-It's hard to explain but here it goes. I get a bench, ly on it with the waist and head facing the floor. then have my feet under another bench, then raise back up and down. Then hold onto a plate with both arms until failure.

-Deadlifts with the legs straight. I keep the legs straight and lift the bar using the back muscles. These are a killer for me.

Well if you have a weak stomach you will have a weak back!
Stomach muscles should be one of the strongest muscles in the body along with the legs and lower back.
That is the 3 core power muscles. If you had nothing else you should have these.
Stomach muscles help with posture, holding in organs, supporting your back, even breathing (diaphram). I would not neglect these muscles if you have a weak back.

If I had to choose with stiff leg dead lifts or good mornings or even hyper extensions to dead lifts, I would choose dead lifts.
Those are the meat and the others are the gravey.

deadlifts for sure - and to a lesser extent, try some deep squats

Well I am certainly in the right place... deadlifts are king when it comes to lower back... just watch the weight and make sure you have good form and dont get injured... also you could try hyper extensions... either on a hyper extension "machine" or as Jogo25 described them...

Hacksii you are right when you say the abs help stabilize the body but I did have to laugh at Macs comment... strong abs definitely help with back ex's and squats etc...
