What Form Counts?

I joined sometime ago but to be honest, I rarely post anything since then. My apologies. However, I couldn't resist a look at the new format. Rather nice. I also noticed that one of the most popular threads had been tiltled, "How much can you lift?" It focused on the bench press. What I was wondering is how do you judge such statistics based on variations in style and form? I'm an old guy at 58 years and weigh in at 91g. I was trained to use strict competitive form for this lift. That is hold the bar in controlled straight arm position prior to lowering it. Lower it to the chest and hold it for at least a second and then press it to arms length and stablizie it. I do about 159g in this format. So I don't really know what I could do if I let the bar rebound off my chest or if I didn't pause at the bottom. I use similar strict competitive form for the squat and deadlift too. I'm guessing that this was a free-style event. Am I correct? Either way, the last two bands of stats were impressive.

Re: What Form Counts?

Numbers, schmumbers bud. You keep training exactly the way you are doing. I say this with respect, the fact that you are still training at 58 is testament to the benefits of training correctly. Sadly, I doubt a lot of guys will still be at it past 40 if they train badly and get injured. I see so many guys with massive potential get left by the wayside due to getting caught up in the ego bench machismo & then suffering a big tear.

These polls are ok for a giggle, but are really just a way of showing off, but not in an alpha male way, this is just a 'lads being lads' thing. Some guys on here are indeed freakishly strong & I can respect that, but I prefer strict form every time & if it means using less weight, so be it.

But considering he only weighs 91 grammes, I think it's pretty damn good.
