pull ups

is it essential to have pull ups in back routine? occasionally do them just find them not that effective.

Re: pull ups

I always do them 1st in my workout, 5x8 to really get the lats going, you try doing them after a killa workout, and u'll be lucky to do one set. Another reason why im doing them at the mo as i train at home and havnt got a lat pulldown yet. Used to do weighted ones before the back injury

I'll 2nd that,

Work up to hanging 40-50kg around your waist for strict reps and you'll def have some half decent lats.

Re: pull ups

hey lewis, i was like you! i could do 1, serious! but i built my strength up slowly by doing the machines and by doing as many as u can daily using a less wide grip, now i can add 20kg extra and do bout 5 only tho, but im about 100kg without the weight.. keep at it, that exersise realy gave my back width!

I did 6 perfect reps, each one from a dead stop, to a full contraction, with 40kg added just a few weeks back, (I weigh 110kg).

I had not gone that heavy, or even been that consistant with my chins recently, due to a bicep tendon pull last year, (nothing to do with chins or even bicep work).

So I was just curious to see if I still had the strength.

I have done 5 reps with 50kg before, when I was lighter, I plan on working back up to this and beyond, now my injury seems to have healed.

Re: pull ups

Thanks.

I treat them the same as all other movements, add a bit of weight every time you can, the same with dips, (done 80kg for 8 reps on those, could not fit anymore inbetween the bars, lol, I really wanted to try double bodyweight)

Many people seem to think that because you are using your body weight that it is sufficient resistance, and it may be to start with, but like every thing else, as you get stronger, you must add weight.

That is true, but not many are going to be gaining much more than a lb per week, it will have a negligible effect on your performance, IMO.

If you are concerned hop on the scales 1st, then calc thr total weigh you need to lift.
