![]() | Hi Guys, This being my first post on the forum, a quick introduction: Been training fully for around 2 years now. Gained 1 1/2 stone. Used to be underweight & skinny, now starting to get a nice shape. A long way to go though. Recently I've dropped a few pounds due to stomach upsets: Found out I'm allergic to Dairy & Wheat!! That mean no milk or bread types. Does anyone have any advise on what I can now use as bulk food?? Protein is fine, it's the Carbs I'm starting to suffer with. All help welcome!! |

| Mature Bodybuilder | Re: Dealing With Allergies Hello, I am new to this forum, so just hope I do this right first time! I have also recently found out that I am allergic to wheat , some gluten and some dairy. Trouble is , I had to put up with uncomfortable symptoms for over three years before we found out what it was! Stomach problems, fat deposits that would not shift, bloating and arthritis pain in my wrists. I only found out when I started a food diary and alarm bells rang that I got the problems when I ate certain things. Took the diary to my Doc and started there! I have now had six weeks free of wheat and oats, my main problems, and have stopped taking milk and yoghurt. I am fine with cheese, which solves afew problems. Check any protein shake you take for wheat products! Many have them as fillers. Look up wheat allergy and dairy intolerance online for loads of info and recipes. They even have lists of "Safe"foods that you can shop for. I recently returned to female bodybuilding after a gap of 20+ years, at the age of 52. Even with a wheat/dairy allergy I have made amazing gains in muscle. I wanted to look slimmer, with less fat, but with lots of muscle. Not easy for a female at the best of times. I eat top quality protein, as much as I can manage to eat in a day. I have wheat free protein shakes that I found online. I am okay with whey, only problem is normal cows milk and yoghurts (which often contain lots of wheat products!). I found having no bread/pasta /cereal hard at first, and most snacks are out. Rice flakes are fine for me as are rice cakes . Lots of fruit and veg. I also have sweet potatoes and baked potatoes for starch. Let us know how you get on! By the way, look at all labels, things such as stock cubes and fruit juice often have high levels of wheat products in them!!

I am not saying the diagnosis is wrong but a lot of docs will just palm that excuse off just to get rid of you. They know when you go and have those tests you will be allergic to something to some degree or another. Has stopping really solved your symptoms? Cheers Colin

YOu can find information on wheat free foods at teh Coeliac website or as from next week its the Coeliac awareness week. Until then... potatoes, Gluten Free pasta& Spaghetti, Gluten free bread and if yu can tolerate them oats. Beware of most breakfast cerials as they now contain Malt extract which is something I have the bubbly tummy reaction to. |

I had always felt bloated and sluggish after eating bread and pasta and I suffered with stomach problems all the while. I stopped eating wheat and gluten 8 years ago after a really bad bout of the "two bob bits" and since then I have been great. If I have something now with wheat in it I am on the toilet for the rest of the day and my body feels like I have been through hell.

Wasnt trying to sound dismissive but some people attribute ailments to food allergies when they aren't (have done it myself) Colin |

Carbs to go for: Quinoa - the dogs bollox rice potato's - all varietys Yams As for milk go for raw milk if you can't get this add some Kefir grains as they eat the lacotse and leave you with the protein, fats and a probiotic mix thats great as a last snack. |

| Mature Bodybuilder | Re: Dealing With Allergies In Greece you are usually asked to keep an accurate food and drink diary for a two week period for the gastro enterologist or allergy specialist, as some responses take longer to show than others. If they think you have an allergy to a product: A blood test is usually done here after you consume the suspect product at the lab. You then get retested to see if you have an auto immune response. They also test this way in Greece by judging heart rate/blood pressure response as well. A biopsy is done on the bowel to test for Celiac disease. These are tests for allergies, not intolerance, which is classed as a different thing and does not cause an immune system response. They can also choose to do a 48 hour stool test while consuming suspect foods. All waste is collected and analysed in the lab over a 48 hour period in the hospital. Changes in the chemical makeup of the samples indicate reaction of the bowl to gluten. I do agree that many people blame food intolerance for symptoms that may not be due to it. On the other hand many people are wheat or dairy intolerant and do not realise what is wrong. It took me over three years of tests to find out that I am allegic to wheat and some gluten (oats) but intolerant of cows milk. Initially I blamed the severe salmonella food poisoning I had three years ago for the stomach upsets, and my age (52 )for the arthritis like pain in my joints. All my symptoms have gone since I cut out the wheat and milk products. No more pain, no more digestive problems, no more racing heart or allergy rashes thank God! Also, no more indegestion tablets or liver wrecking drugs to stop acid reflux and the heart-attack like pain in my diaphragm or between my shoulders that I get after having wheat products.
