Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

Hey,

I'm trying to source some good fats for my protein/fat meals and have no idea where to buy concentrated fish oil/flax oil.

I've had a look around Tescos and can't find any.. I was in sainsburys yesterday and saw some flax seed oil, but i've read bad things about the omega 3/6 ratios, so was going to buy just the fish oil, but from where?

Holland and Barrats is the only place i can think of that would sell that type of stuff. Are their products ok, any in particular fish oils you could recommend?

Thanks,

Ross.

Re: Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

I've not read much about that oil, can anyone else confirm that it's decent oil? (with any links to why it's a good source would be cool)

Quote:

Your saturated fat should come from your animal
products and you can even toss in some butter or
coconut oil for cooking. Your monounsaturated fat
should come from mixed nuts, olives, and olive oil.
And your polyunsaturated fat should from flaxseed
oil, fish oil, and mixed nuts.
^^^ That's a quote from John Bernardi's book Gourmet Nutrition, so i was aiming for those fat sources. He recommends extra virgin versions of olive oil.

Re: Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

It's a good oil due to its high smoke levels. And obviously the fat count.

Re: Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

Sorry to jump in here, but with lack of diet knowledge and seeing we are already on this....why do I want fat oils in my diet ( benefits ) and when or how do I apply ( at which point do I take them or add them to food or take directly as a supplement ) them...? Hear alot about this but not sure why it's necessary...Thanks

Re: Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

Main basic benefits are things like, hormone regulation, cell membrane structure and function, satiety (through CCK), energy (when needed), slowing down absorptions of foods etc...

Loads more but they're just the few I remember..

Can add them in anywhere mate, from nuts, to tuna, steak, oils etc - but try and limit fat intake as much as possible both pre and post-workout for one of the reasons I mentioned above.

Fats slow down the secretion of hydrochloric acid - which is whats partly resposible for breaking down food in the gut. So would go against the whole point of taking a fast acting protein like whey after a workout.

So if I already eat a can of tuna and a couple of peanut butter sandwiches am I getting what I need or do I want to add it in like a supplement...?

Depending on bodyweight - I'd probably throw a little oil into 1-2 of your meals too

Re: Where and which fat (oils) to buy.

your thread did not get jacked just expanded....

you want to know what ils are good? is this because your diet lacks good fats? are you wanting to add it to foods or cook with it?

how lacking is your diet of fats as the best way is to get them from egg yolks/fish and PB in my opinion...
