Protein suppresses appetite - Atkins TV programme

On at the same time as last night's steroids TV programme on channel 4 (which I recorded), there was another really interesting one on the Atkins diet (Horizon, BBC2). In a nutshell a couple of recent, properly run scientific studies have concluded:

1) People lose weight on the Atkins diet because although in principle people can eat as many calories as they want, in practice they actually end up eating less than they were before the diet. So it works like any other diet in the respect that to lose weight you have to eat less calories than you use.

2) In answer to the question why people given the option to eat as many calories as they wanted ended up eating less, the results from one study suggested that consuming a high protein diet suppressed appetite. This combined with another study showed that this was not connected to fat consumption i.e. a high protein, low fat diet had this effect.

Interesting stuff I thought (I hadn't planned to watch it but got sucked in...). Also, if protein really does suppress appetite that has some implication in terms of making it more difficult to eat all the calories we're meant to on a BBing diet.
