![]() | Diabetes and protein Hi all just been to see my diabetic consultant for my annual check up and he aint very happy with the amount of protein that I am eating. Ive put on 1.5 stone since my check up this time last year ( Ive lost alot of body fat but put quite a bit of muscle mass on) My blood pressure is up slightly and my ck reading is 240 which I understand should be around 80-100 (not really sure what this reading is tho?) Saw the dietician aswell and she reckons that halving my protein consumption would bring everything down to a normal level again. Feel well hacked off cos my training was going really well but if my health is at risk ive gotta cut down on my protein intake which will obviously affect my traing. Any thoughts? |

If your diet is adequate in other nutrients such that your protein utilization is optimized, you may still be able to eat your 1g of protein per 1lb bodyweight Post your honest diet and when you work out in that diet plan, your protein/carb/fat ratio, your height and weight, and let's take a look. In the diabetes circles only 4 oz of milk with no other carbs except the safe carbs are allowed per each of the 6 meals you are eating. Do you drink your protein drink with water or milk? It could be your body is turning your excess protein into sugar it needs if you are not eating enough carbohydrates. It will be a matter of understanding your particular body's needs and when you are hungry. Not everyone's "food clock" is the same. It will vary day to day depending on your expenditure of calories. You may have hit a food plateau and need to change things up a bit. Do you use the 1/4, 1/4, 1/2 plate rule? Here's a link that may help you. bodybuilding and diabetes I have to go to work, but I'll get back to ya with some more information.

![]() | Re: Diabetes and protein Hi Peg Thanks for the reply. Ok here goes- Im 35yrs old, 6ft tall, weigh 15.5 stone and my diet goes like this: 7.30AM 1 bowl of oats mixed with water 1 pint water mixed with protein powder 1 apple 10AM 2 handfulls mixed nuts 12.30pm Whole meal pasta or sweet potato with 2 chicken fillets or 2 tins tuna and side salad 1 pear 1 pint water 3pm 1 chicken fillet or 1 tin tuna 1 banana 5pm Train 45 mins 6pm 1pint water mixed with protein powder 6.30pm omlette made with 2 full eggs and 4 egg whites with 2 chicken fillets or 2 tins tuna and salad 1 pint water 9pm 3 Weetabix with half pint semi skimmed milk Ive never worked out the ratios and never heard of the 1/4, 1/4, 1/2 plate rule? I take it these are the ratios between carbs and protein? Do you know what a ck reading means? This diet has been working for me very well but Im very tempted to cut the protein by half just because Im worried about damaging my kidneys and my long term health has to come before my body building. I didnt mention that my hba1c result was 8.8 today which is crap compared to 7.2 last year. The consultant was also concerned about the 1.5 stone increase in weight (which is obviously caused by my bb) and my 142/78 blood pressure (was 120/70 last year) All these increases were all blamed on my protein intake which I was told were far too high for a diabetic? Pretty confused by it all and quite hacked off cos I thought I would be helping my long term health eating and training like this. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Diet for the Diabetic Bodybuilder The 1/4 Plate Rule 1/4 starchy carbs, 1/4 protein, 1/2 plate nonstarchy carbs Fats should be good fats and you should focus on omega 3's and 6's. (EFA) Animal fats in meats should be strictly limited or eliminated. Butter is acceptable within limits. Salmon and tuna fillets are excellent sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Portion control is critical for anyone with diabetes. The plate rule helps you to eyeball your portions. Once you get accustomed to the amounts, you can eyeball it without measuring. What follows are some fundamental nutritional quidelines to remember about the foods you eat in regards to the 1/4 plate rule: (See the exchange lists for exact quantities.)
Their suggested ratios Carbohydrates 45% to 65% of daily calories Protein 15% to 20% of daily calories Fats 20% to 35% of daily calories The fat percentages should be your Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). I'm not sure if I agree 100% with their ratios I prefer the 40/40/20 or perhaps for you at the moment 45/35/20 You can use a point system. Each meal is equivalent to 10 points 4 points starchy carbs, (1/4 plate) 4 points protein, (1/4 plate) 2 points fats 0 points for non-starchy carbs (1/2 plate) We can practice making some sample weekly menus together based on those ratios. I want you to be able to self regulate yourself when we are finished. It's the teacher in me. ![]() OK. Let's look at your diet. My recommendations are based on the 1/4 plate rule at the moment and the points since you did not tell me the portion quantity served. Quote:
Some other suggestions from Managing Diabetes in Bodybuilding are listed below: Quote:
I would also add a multivitamin to make sure you are getting the 10 top vitamins that body builders need. CK, I believe is Creatine Kinase Check out the link and scroll down the page to the Wikipedia information and related links for more information on it. I hope this helps you. Peg
