atkins for a vegetarian

my wife is a vegie ( sometimes eats chicken ) , what id like to know is can she do an atkins type diet ? shes 25 , 5'10" and around 14st 8lb (size 16/18) , before having our baby in december she was 12st and a size 12 , she doesnt do that much excersize , but ive started her doing 20 mins of cardio , the problem is her diet , im just about to start atkins , thought it would be good if we could help each other and both be on it ? she eats meat free burgers etc would these ok ? the carbs dont seem too high ?

How great you are supporting your wife in your plan to get fit!

No offence, but if she eats chicken sometimes, she is not a vegetarian.

I am not keen on all that processed veggie stuff either.

I am not keen on the Atkins diet either.

I think that eating whole natural foods is the way to go. If you think you are carb sensitive, and that is debatable (I am sure Hackskii will be along soon to argue this point, ), then the Atkins diet might be ok.

I would work on making permanent healthy changes in your diet that you can maintain for life.

Simple changes like reading the ingredients, and for the first few weeks cutting out anything that says hydrogenated or fractionated and ANYTHING deep fried would be a start if these are in your diet (and they are in most people's diet).

Secondly, I would cut out all the simple carbs, like white sugar and white flour.

If you do want to play with carbs, then try cutting out the starchy carbs after 5-6 pm and only eating fibrous carbs like veg after this time.

Otherwise wait for Scott to tell you what a veggie can eat on the Atkins, probably egg whites, cheese and spinach.

I don't think it would be a diet most people would be able to maintain IMHO

If you would like more specific help, post up what you are eating now, and then we can make adjustments that will help you to make weight loss much easier.

Respect

T

the plan with myself is to do an atkins style diet to lose the first bit of bf, currently at 20% , after that i am going to sustain a whole new diet which will be controlled p + c + f etc , thought she could do a simular thing by restricting the carbs , i agree about the processed rubber meat free sh*t sh eats !

Is she nursing?
If so, she will be burning quite a few calories and those 2 extra stones will disappear soon enough.
Have her eat 3 eggs a day and drink one quart of low fat milk if she is nursing.
Have her drink a 16oz glass of water after each nursing.

Increase her nut intake during the day before 6:00pm
Have your wife go walking for 30-45 minutes every day by strolling the baby.

These things suggested by Tat are a definite must do in my opinion. They helped me lose the extra flab.

thanks for the reply peg , unfortunately shes not nursing ( breast feeding right? ) and she has put weight on since the birth , its been 10 months now , its basicaly a combination of both bad diet and little excersise , understandably she is restricted , but if i can get her a proper diet then i think she would go for it ?

A baby can be quite overwhelming to both mom and dad physically and mentally.

Does SHE want to lose the weight?

I can relate to her dilemma.

The strolling of the baby for 30-45 minutes, not eating fast carbs after 6:30pm and eating a good protein breakfast will do wonders for her.
I still struggle with 5-6 meals a day.

I found for me it was better to focus on disciplining my body to eat when the stomach growls and not when my mind's appetite says eat since eating became my flight or fight response to the stress of the day.

Is she eating to relieve the stress of her day? Can you give her a back massage now and again when she seems stressed out. Can you talk with her about her day? Does she have time away from the baby?
Have her log her emotions when she eats.
If she can, substitute doing 5 to 15 minutes of weight training through out the day instead of eating when she is stressed, that will help her immensely. She doesn't have to lift free weights. She can lift her baby.
Playing with the Baby.

I hope those links give your wife some ideas for exercising.

It takes baby steps to change eating habits and life style.

Soft drinks, alcohol? Is she drinking those to relax and take a break from her hectic day as a mom. The work of moms is extremely stressful with little ones. Have her change to a mint tea or cinnomon spice tea - with added lemon, no milk, honey, or sugar, if possible.

For it to be long term and successful she should not "diet".
She should change her eating habits and attitude towards food.

Suggested diet to start and then it can be modified and finetuned as she adapts to the new diet.
Cheat food items can be at any meal but portions must be limited by 1/2 of normal intake.
Every 2 weeks delete a cheat food item from one of the meals until cheat items are only occasionally eaten and still are smaller portions. "Just a taste".

Incorporate a good multivitamin at breakfast.
500 mg vitamin C 3X a day
400 IU vitamin E 2X a day
2 fish oil capsules at each meal

Incorporate her diet into when she feeds the baby to make it less work for her.

Breakfast
2-4 eggs depending on how hungry she is in the morning
piece of fruit or whole grain toast with cinnamon and splenda
coffee or tea

Mid Morning
1/2 cup of mixed nuts
1/2 c cottage cheese with mandrin oranges (substitute different fruit each day or add 1/4 cup yogurt to this)
If she wants, cottage cheese makes a great "sour cream" for a jacket so she could just eat the nuts midmorning and add 1/4 cottage cheese without fruit to lunch jacket and eat only 1/4 c cottage cheese here with fruit.
sweetened (1 tsp honey) lemon tea

Lunch

6oz of chicken or equivalent protein intake in tofu
slow carb vegetable
brown rice or jacket or sweet potato
tea or coffee

Mid Afternoon
1 can chicken or boiled, baked, or grilled chicken) mixed with 1 TBS sweet relish, 1TBS mayo, 1 stalk celery, 1/2 apple, 1/4 c mixed nuts
or
6 oz protein equivalent of tofu with 1/2 C cottage cheese

Dinner
6 oz chicken or protein equivalent of tofu
slow carb
4 oz mixed fruit bowl
tea or coffee

No eating after this meal unless the stomach is growling.
Then eat 4 oz of protein or 1 TBS natural peanut butter and drink a glass of ice water.

Here is atkins site with vegetarian dishes: http://www.atkins.com/recipes/recipe...ory=vegetarian

Nothing wrong with atkins diet. I lost very well for the first 6 weeks then I hit a plateau.

But vegetarians usually will have a creatine and vitamin B12 deficiancy. Supplementing this usually does the trick.
I have never done the vegetarian thing before but In my opinion I think that way of eating is flawed.
There is a vegetarian drummer that broke his arm playing the drums as he had some kind of osteoperosis from being a vegetarian.

The induction is basicly 30 grams or less of carbs a day and all the protein and fats you want.
Simple really. Takes a few days to slip into ketosis and the fat starts melting away.
I have heard of people loosing around 20 lbs in 3 weeks.
I didnt lose that much but I still lost alot on that.
Then you slowly add back the carbs using a lower glycemic index carb and you can keep adding them very slowly till you get to the point where you are not gaining or losing.

I had a friend of mine only cut bread out of her diet and she started losing weight.
Have here stay away from the simple sugars and eat more fiberous fruits and vegetables.

Oh, I remembered the term, it is DEMI-vegetarian when people only sometimes eat animals.

I would also rep Peg for her fab post, I can't as I have to spread some more reputation around first!
