I have a big ol bottle at home.
It is very thick and will kind of stain things. It is called black Strap cuz it is black like tar.

That goes back super far in folklore medicine, they used to use it like they used to use cod liver oil in the spoon
But many of those things are lost in time.

Another healthfull sweetener is Organic Grade B Maple Syrup.
That stuff is expensive though, but it is very good.
It has many minerals in it like black strap.

Cap's thread a sticky please

Cap:
Great site for finding out about foods.

I think it should be a sticky.

Scott:
Black Strap molassas is a Southern tradition.
It is quite heavy and strong but full of good nutrition.
It definitely has its own distinctive taste.
Makes for a great barbecue sauce.....
I'll post it in the recipe section.

Molassas is used down south more like maple syrup is used and with all the sugar cane here, it is plentiful and cheap.

Speaking of maple.
I cook bacon with maple syrup (organic grade B) and it makes the bacon so tasty and you get a fat from the bacon, protein from the bacon and maple syrup for the carb. It tasts out of this world and the maple turns to like a carmalize and sticks super good.

That is so Canadian, eh! You hoser!

THey have been eating bacon and sausages with maple syrup for ages!

It is hard to find the unrefined grades of maple syrup in the UK. The refined stuff yes, and it is not THAT expensive.

Used to be able to get it bulk from health food shops in Canada.

I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurve maple syrup!

Not All Molasses Are the Same

The word "Molasses" is used to cover a variety of products in the sugar industry, "Fancy Molasses", is a direct product of sugar cane and is in no way a by-product of any sugar manufacturing process. Fancy Molasses is an excellent source of iron, calcium, and vitamin B and serves as a great energy food.

The thick dark brown liquid obtained from the refining of sugar cane is commonly referred to as "Blackstrap Molasses". Some of it's more common uses is in the production of industrial alcohol and feeding livestock.

Fancy Molasses - also known as Gold Star, when used in baking, the results are a light colored, sweet product, also good as a topping on bread, biscuits, and crackers.

Lite Molasses - contains 40% less sugar than our Fancy Molasses. Recipes made with Light Molasses have a subtle flavor, and are lighter in color. Cookies are slightly softer while breads are more crusty. Light molasses comes from the first boiling of the sugar.

Cooking Molasses - is a blend of Fancy and Blackstrap Molasses. The use of Cooking Molasses results in a darker, less sweet baked product (great for ginger snaps).

Unsulphured Molasses - has the best flavor, is made from sun-ripened cane which has grown 12-15 months.

Blackstrap Molasses - is a direct by-product of the sugar making process, it is dark and has a slightly bitter, robust flavor.

source: Types of molasses
You may want to experiment with your molasses.
