Fats or Calories

Hi everyone,

My better half has decided to start a diet in readiness for our summer hols. My question is, she knows what she should eat however the stuff that she isnt sure of should she be looking at calories or fat content. Hope this makes sense and thankyou for any replies.

Re: Fats or Calories

Both. Fats aren't something to be scared of. Saturated fats should be minimal, but we still need these. As long as the fats she is consuming at good fats, ie mono unsaturated and polyunsaturated then fats are good - in moderation - just like anything else. Think oily fish like salmon. Excellent dieting food, but full of fat!

Essentially, your diet should be low in fats in comparison to other foods, but fats are needed for the most basic functions.

Sugar is the one that most people don't look out for.

Why not post her diet up? PSCarb I believe has done some diets for women in the past with great success.

Re: Fats or Calories

Fats are necessary for good health.

She just needs to modify her diet some.
More fiber, more water, less overall volume of food.

Yeah, you need a small amount of all fats - but the 'healthiest' fats are the poly-unsaturates. Though i dont really see how you get a healthiest - they all play their roles.

Re: Fats or Calories

You need all fats, every one of them.
Some the body will make but the Omega 3's and the Omega 6's need to be supplemented.

You need all fats and suggesting staying away from saturated fats is something that I myself would not do.

You need all, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fats.
All fats are healthy and necessary.

Scott is correct although there is one fat that is no good and that is Trans fat....for a man Saturated fat is essential in some amounts as they have a direct link to testosterone...

To build on that, drop hydrogenated oils too, those are totally bad for you.

Diets low in saturated fats and cholesterol have been known to have negative effects on testosteron production as well as other hormones.

Not saying you load up on sat fats or cholesterol but moderation is key here.

lol, that's a different slant to our discussion over on the other UK-m...

LA and LNA are the only 2 essential fats, as the others can all be made. However, it makes abundant sense to enjoy a wide range of different fats so long as they are not damaged, as they are excellent energy sources, and have far more roles than you would imagine possible given teh "fat is evil" slant that is pushed in the mainstream.

Not a slant at all mate.
Beings that the American diet is overly rich in Omega 6's and defficient in Omega 3's, it is pointless to supplement Omega 6's when one gets more than one need's.
So, I supplement Omega 3's and I do not supplement Omega 6's.
Again the ratio is way out in the typical American diet and when I say way out, it is huge.

So, nothing offers a better selection of supplementation for Omega 3's than fish oils (dont correct me and say krul either, you know what I mean).

And your arguement on being rancid at your own suggestion was just 5% which is nothing in my opinion and even that is questionable.
All studies done on fish oils show positives and any infrence that those were rancid didnt seem to skew the results of all the studies done.

On our little debate on the other board I was defending fish oils, you were defending Udo's and flax.

But yes you need all fats with the exception of hydrogenated oils and trans fats.
And the typical American diet is too high in Omega 6's so there is no point in supplementing those as you are asking for trouble pushing the ratio even farther out.

Welcome to the board Tony, are you stalking me? lol...................
