Can someone give my mrs some advice please?

Searching around hasn't really answered the mountain of questions she is talking at me about so I said I'd put them on here....

She is currently 21, 5ft 6.5 and weighs 66kg. Fluctuates due to that lovely lady procedure of bleeding for 4 days without dying. She used to eat a lot of junk food and is trying to clean up her diet. She has a bit of trouble trying new foods (thought gammon was fish so hadn't tried it for 21 years) which I'm trying to work on.

She goes to spin 3-4 times a week and a core class once every 2 weeks. No weights in the gym really.

She also works from 5-8 in a bank on the phone so eating is a bit tricky for her at this time. With uni as well she struggles to get much good food down so I've also pointed her in the direction of the recipe forum section.

She takes a whey protein shake once before or after gym. And she takes a multivitamin and Grenade too. She wants to know the following:

She wants to lose fat and tone up. Is she going the correct way about it?
She eats 1200 calories a day (suggested by myfitnesspal app), should this be more and why?
    Should she drink protein?
What's the best thing to do for evening nutrition as she can't eat between 5-8. Gets home at 9 so wants a meal at that time. Can someone suggest something?
Can she drink casein at night?
    Will grenade affect her thyroid?
Should she even be doing spin 3-4 times a week? As previously she did sod all exercise.
Anything else she should be taking? (natural lol)
Should she be doing freeweights? And what are best for women? As the freeweights area scares her (bless)
She's trying to cut out all carbs. Is this correct? (I've suggested carb cycling but it went straight out the other side)
She wants to know how long it's likely to take her to lose about a stone.

She initially lost about 7 lbs in a week but then put on another 4. Why is this? She is worried she's not eating enough.

    Thanks all.

I would love to give my wife a grenade. But on a serious note, too many questions at once.
So I will answer one. When it comes to exercise she should only do what she enjoys, if not she will give it up.

She wants to lose fat and tone up. Is she going the correct way about it?

First mistake is her not making her own account on here, there is ALOT of helpful stuff on here and we are a friendly bunch. If any of the lads perv then the resident girlies will tell them off.

She eats 1200 calories a day (suggested by myfitnesspal app), should this be more and why?

That's a great app. I use it but I added all my own foods (took about an hour) but the values on there are often wrong and don't have the carbs/protein/fat content added, if you don't know how to do this in box me and I will give you a hand.

    Should she drink protein?

If she isn't getting enough from her diet yes. Get a good multi vitamin for her asap.

What's the best thing to do for evening nutrition as she can't eat between 5-8. Gets home at 9 so wants a meal at that time. Can someone suggest something?

You be a good boyfriend and cook for her so it's done when she gets back :p is she not able to take a packed lunch ?

Can she drink casein at night?

It's not essential by any means, just adds £££ for a student that could be keeping the cash.

    Will grenade affect her thyroid?

Is that the fat burner from OP Massive ? A few lads I work with rant and rave about OP Massive but havent had a chance to check it out yet.

Should she even be doing spin 3-4 times a week? As previously she did sod all exercise.

Maybe 3 weights days with a bit of cardio afterwards ? Or cardio on her non weights days ? Spinning classes again just add £££ running is free!

Anything else she should be taking? (natural lol)

    Multi vitamin.

    Should she be doing freeweights?

    Yes.

And what are best for women? As the freeweights area scares her (bless)

Don't bless her, get in there with her and show her the ropes so she doesn't wanted in and end up hurting herself.

She's trying to cut out all carbs. Is this correct? (I've suggested carb cycling but it went straight out the other side)

Read the Timed Carb sticky at the top of the loosing weight section. Awsome read and very helpful I'm doing it right now.

She wants to know how long it's likely to take her to lose about a stone.

How longs a price of string ? It depends on a million factors.

She initially lost about 7 lbs in a week but then put on another 4. Why is this? She is worried she's not eating enough.

Is this with her no carb diet ? It's probably her shedding water, then she had carbs and gained it all back.

^ Thanks so much for taking the time to write that out mate. Yeah LOADS of questions! Shame I didn't know the answers to them but I'll get her to sit down and have a read.

I always say this about females looking to improve there figure, squat twice a week and cardio as much as shes comfortable with, thats plenty to start off with, as for the foods, i wouldnt give her a shake just for the sake of it, get her to eat more protein in food, will keep her full on her low kcal diet. Women tend to make carbs the bulk of their diet, so make sure shes getting plenty of protein and make sure shes eating some fat.

Cant really add anything to what marsy and fatstuff said.
Id second the advice to get her to make her own account cause i gurantee you'll give her advice she mightnt take, But if it comes from some of the ladies on here who practice what they preach and have the avi's to prove it, it will be a different matter.
Also scout about a few different gyms for her, loads have ladies only free weights areas. great idea for the newbie girls joining up.
And if shes having trouble eating in work, maybe the protein shake could be had then, and have a healthy meal post workout instead.
Again as fatstuff said radically reducing carbs will drop alot of weight but it can rebound badly if your not carefull!
    wish her luck!

Re: Can someone give my mrs some advice please?

so what does she eat? write down what she eats, easier to advice 1200 is quite low, no need to cut extremely in order to drop few kg, she needs to eat correctly, drink enough water, try to avoid sugar. there is no need to cut carbs at all, she still can eat low GI carbs, if shes active, it wont do any harm. doing weights is good-it will help to tone the body, cardio, aerobics will help to lose. yes, she can drink casein before bed.
if she lost and quick gained back that might be because of extreme cut of kcals, thats why going directly to eating very low amount kcals isnt very helpfull, it might go down at first and then weight will be regained and even more than it was before dieting -most people cant keep extreme dieting for a long time so when they go back to normal eating habits they put more weight on

Re: Can someone give my mrs some advice please?

agree with fitness. all these poor women that are told to cut carbs... what a joke. you NEED carbs. def get her in the free weights area. please assure her that she will not bulk up (as a lot of women believe) - 1200 is really low cals, almost crash diet amount. and we all know crash diets and women do not mix. id say keep it to around 1500? bit more sensible. encourage her to eat more protein, she doesnt necessarily have to drink it.

she just needs to do some research and/or talk to some like-minded females x x
