Rib pain

I never felt any twinges or pains so i dont know how i did it, but the left side of my ribs are painful and now it looks like my left pec is holding water. It is not too painful to touch. However when I take deep breaths or move into a particular angle like holding my arm up i get a really sharp pain in my ribs. Yesterday I had a fit of the hiccups, which was not very pleasant at all.
Do any of you guys have any idea what I may have done, and have any ideas about the best course of action to take?

Re: Rib pain

The symptoms you describe suggest either a muscular injury or the onset of an infection.

Do you have a fever or productive cough?

GP visit(or A&E,dependant on severity) to listen to your chest sounds

Re: Rib pain

i've busted ribs on both sides, it hurt to reach/twist and coughing or sneezing put me on my knees.

rib injuries suck, they take weeks to heal and there is nothing you can do :(

Re: Rib pain

thats the beauty of rib injuries...
if its a muscle tear on the intercostals you'd see purple/blue bruising on the skin from internal bleeding i think.

if its a pull/strain then your a lucky git who just needs to rest up

Re: Rib pain

Its difficult to say what has happened when you haven't experienced any trauma to cause an injury to that area.

As Paramaniac has suggested, it could be an infection. Personally, if you have noticed swelling around your pec that wasn't there before and it is painful, then get it checked out asap. Purely for peace of mind and the doctor to say, you are fine, just a bruised rib, or tear in the muscle- rest and crack on.....

A bruised or damaged muscle around the ribs, depending on severity will have distal tracking; in laymans terms the blood would move below the area of damage. Any fluid that is retaining around an area is most likely to be some sort of infection/damage, with the bodies natural response of putting fluid around there to protect it.

Hope that helps!
