    Torn Intercostal Muscle

I don't know exactly how I managed to do this, gardening of all things I think, but have managed to tear at least three of the attachments for my intercostal muscles just below the sternum.

Been in serious pain for two days and just got it diagnosed. Hurts like hell to raise my arms, lie down, twist my trunk, side bend, breathe deeply and a range of other movements. The pain radiates into my back and spine too and is even throwing off my balance when I walk right now. Weirdly coughing is not too bad.

Anyway this is gonna mean 3-6 months with no weights

The prescription pain relief is strong NSAIDs, but I want to avoid chronic use of those so am gonna see how I go without for most of the time and maybe only use them at night to help get to sleep (as lying down is when this hurts most).

Has anyone else experienced this kind of injury?

    Cheers buddy.

Was told it's a grade 2 tear, which apparently means the muscle is still attached but has mini tears within it. Hopefully it'll heal quickly... am not enjoying this very much!

Nightmare! Sorry to hear this mate. Who did the diagnosis? What treatment are you getting? I ask only as my own experience with my torn pec was so terrible that now I know to insist on better treatment.

3 - 6 months sounds high? Is it tendon or muscle tears? External or internal? I am guessing intercostals are pretty tricky to apply therapy to. :/ Has there been any visible bruising / blood pooling?

    heya buddy.

Diagnosis was at Bristol Royal Infermary A&E. Three-six months sounds like a long time too, but I guess they are always over cautious with those kinds of diagnosis to try and prevent people from tryign to do things way too early.

I have a little definite swelling following around under the edge of my ribcage (both sides of the sternum). There's possibly some darkening/a bruise like appearance but it's very slight. The diagnosis was for internal intercostals/intercostal membrane, and I know pain can be defered, but that kind of makes sense with the sensation as the pain seems to be more internal and just inside the lower edge of the ribcage.

Bristol? You live in this neck of the woods mate?

Really hope you get on the mend asap - sounds like a really nasty injury to have since it affects basically any torso movement. Good excuse to put your feet up for a while anway Are you booked in for further treatments or have they just basically said 'tough sh*t, bye!'?

    Re: Torn Intercostal Muscle

lol, I got a very polite 'tough sh*t, bye', although was told to keep seeing my GP if I need pain meds or if it appears to get worse or I aggrivate it in any way.

I guess I should really look at getting some supp's for it - chondroitin, glucosamine, MSM, cissus etc but am not highly convinced by the studies on them tbh.

Ah feck it. Think it's worth seing a physio?

MSM I take purely for its anti-hayfever properties - absolute godsend miracle supplement in my (not-so-watery) eyes

    Re: Torn Intercostal Muscle

Sounds awful. Especially how it must impact on so many daily movements. Are you doing any exercise or is it all too painfull?

    You in Bristol then?

    Re: Torn Intercostal Muscle

Hey Katy, yeah am staying with family right now about ten miles outside of Bristol!

No training at all right now - which is a real pain as for the last month or two I've been absolutely flying with things going really well.

Closest thing to exercise is taking the dog out and jogging really gently with her for just a few mins at a time - am not sure it helps the injury, but it keeps me sane and the beastie happy!

On the positive side am slightly optimistic that it might not be as bad as diagnosed - does seem a little bit easier to bend sideways and twist today (although expanding my ribcage still hurts like crazy). If it was a serious tear I'd expect it to take longer to show this small improvement than just 3-4 days...

    Re: Torn Intercostal Muscle

Oh well that sounds positive It'll be interesting to see how you feel over the next few weeks and how quickly things improve - I guess that'll give you more indication of how long it will take before you can train again.

I do feel for you though especially as you were really happy with progress until that point.

I'm in Bristol next Monday! If possible I'll check out Tom's gym

I still haven't been to Toms gym, but will certainly pop in at some point... might be a little too depressing whilst injured though, and am not sure he'd want me there hobbling around awkwardly at the moment anyway!

Ha ha, yeah you wouldn't be the best advert for health and safety of the gym! I haven't been before either but have seen lots of pics.
