Herniated disc ( pics inside )

I did this back in Sep 2006 doing barbell rows, I stopped and started again over the months and years but it's no good

At the moment I'm following a muscle balace program from the US and it's helping slowly, I can tell.

Basically I think this happened because of weak right glute and a really tight inner right thigh, my whole chain is tight as well, definitely my hams - their really tight. I probably lifted to heavy as well in the main and the last few reps were really poor. So lots of thing really

As bad as this MRI is I'm not really in that much pain, just a cold numb ache feeling down my right leg which just won't go. If I move my hips and like flex my lower back I can feel the bottom of the spine pop and grind - no pain from this, just doesn't feel good

Definitely can't lift any weights, I know it won't help me, I just train abbs, work the right glute, strech and use my Inversion table

I know might be impossible to anwser, but when I'll healed should I ever do deads and squats again

I know a guy on here Andy_Mac said deads and squats should be done for the rehabilitation for lower back problems, but should they always be done?

Has anyone else had a disc problem this bad and trained hard again?

Paul

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

I did mine in 2005. I think doing deadlifts and squats are a must. I do more reps with lighter weights now like 5-20 rep squats. Havn't really got back into deadlifts yet but that's because it's not a deadlift friendly gym

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

I've had this injury also. I went for surgery, having the disk shaved to remove the protrusion on the sciatic nerve. This was back in 2001. Rehab took nearly two full years but I am now back to squatting and deadlifting heavy - so there is light at the end of the tunnel mate.

The operation was only offered to me after I was persistent with my consultant, so my advice would be to be the same - don't be fobbed off. Doctors are only used to dealing with the general public and as a sportsman, your requirements are different.

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

Wonder what the doc meant by fancy handwriting?

it appears you've got some signs of damage to the other joints behind your disc- the facet joints he referred to. for this reason movements like deads and squats should be considered with caution as these joints, in simple terms, help keep you upright. if you aggrevate them further you'll put yourself at risk of other degenerative dieseases of the spine (some spondylosing arthropathies as thier collectively known as).

Only a physio could give you sound advice regarding your question mate.

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

Thanks for your time guys I appreciate it

Oh, I was persistent alright, however when I first went to the docs, I was shoed off and told it's a pulled muscle. Made sure I got my MRI though

The fancy handwriting - I guess thats the radiologist talking to my consultant at the hospital, that consultant I was seeing really didn't give a sh!t, guess I'm lucky I got the MRI out of him!

Nice to hear you over come this Porky Pie, TBH though surgery scares the living daylights out of me, not sure if I'd even want the NHS boys opening me up, if their anything like that consultant/physo guy no chance

How much pain excaly were you in though Porky Pie to merit surgery?

I don't feel the pain I have merits surgery

If I did have surgery though I would want to go here in the US, but I couldn't affort it

http://www.laserspineinstitute.com/

Some sports physio's say I should, when I've ready, do sqauts and deads, but others say don't and others say don't lift at all

I'd love to know the opinion of a sports physio who does or has worked with weight lifters ect and has delt with other sportsman with this, love to know his advice on this

Anyone else who has had this problem and came back please post, that would be great

Paul

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

i had a discectomy l4/5 privately in oct 2006. i have never really recoverd .i wish i had found the surgeon i am now seeing before i had the first op . i had an open procedure and was told 6 weeks to recover.4 months later i was still really struggling and not back at work.up to date mri 2 months after surgery has showed that the disc is still trapping the nerve and now i have upper back ache due to my posture guarding the original injury.i also dropped from 15st 5 to 13 st as i was told i was carrying too much muscle bulk .doing this has not really helped either.
the surgeon i am seeing now is martin knight of the "spinal foundation " he wants to re do the op but to use a laser to weld the disc hole shut and burn off the protrusion. if you do not use the laser you will always have a weak spot in the disc.
i had tried all the muscle balance physio an accupuncture but as long as that nerve is trapped you are gonna be in pain.
i still manage to train but no where near like what i used to .i find stretching good but there is a fine line between just enough and too much.if you have fully healed from the injury then i know friends who have gone back doing exactly what they were doing before they were injured.everybody is an individual case so listen to your body.the operation im gonna have done is in france and can only be funded privately and medical insurance will not cover it .
if you need any advice feel free to contact me.

Re: Herniated disc ( pics inside )

Hi guys, I forgot to check this site

I had my MRI's scan up, but I took them down for security reasons, because my name, hospital ID ect was on it

I'm actually doing a journal on another site fitnessuncovered ( Andy_Mac ) 's site

I without a doubt, believe muscle imbalances are the issue at grass roots

LSI in the US called me back and said I have a bulge, they can help but it would cost $30,000

I know a bulge can be fixed without this

My condition is getting better since following the muscle balance program

http://www.losethebackpain.com/getstarted.html

I sent my MRI CD to Al Meilus in the US who confirmed my Iliacus is over developed and thoughfor this needs to stretched and the glutes needs to be strengthen,

http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/Iliopsoas.html

Al Meilus the robotics Chiropractor is a fountain of knowledge

http://www.meilus.com/

colrob1 if you have your MRI on cd sent it to him, he's know what's wrong and why, I might be seeing him in June if I'm still not 100% fixed
