![]() | Huer my back, need advice? I have just had to abort tonights workout. My first excercise as always on Mondays is straight leg deadlifts. Until today I have always done them using DBs, but today I changed to a barbell (using the same amount of weight). The first set was fine, but on the second I felt a sharp sudden pain in my lower back and I cannot put any weight at all on my right leg because when I try it hurts like hell on the right side of my lower back. Is this muscle or nerve damage, and should I put an ice pack on it immediately? Could switching to a barbell have anything to do with it. Thank you. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | sounds like to hit the sciatic nerve a bit... a lot of people's form with SLDLs is appaling imo, and yours might be a little off... you really have to stick your chest out and look up - this gives you the natural arch in your back, if you let this go your asking for trouble... far too many people arch their back the wrong way with this exercise and i squeem whenever any one does this ![]() most people when they are doing this exercise will be no-where near the floor with their weights... ;)

![]() | Will ice do any good? Also will I be ok to do bench presses, triceps, and biceps while it heals? Or do I have to stop lifting for a week or so. BTW I appreciate your tip about form, something tells me I'll remember it from now on!!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I had muscular pain once so bad that all I could do was crawl to move anywhere. You need to check to make sure it's not a slipped disc or a serious thing. If it is only muscle the following worked for me: Take in morning, afternoon and evening: 2000 mg Calcium 1000 mg Magnesium 800 IU Vitamin E 2000 mg Vitamin C protein shake including 1/4 C wheat germ. 2 hard boiled eggs if you do not have eggs in your protein shake. Take in morning and in the evening: One complete high potency multivitamin. Follow this until pain subsides but no more than 3 days. Then reduce the vitamins to 2X a day for one week Then reduce the vitamins to your normal dosage. I was able to walk after the 2nd day and fully recovered after a week. BUT that was from a muscular injury. Find out what your injury is from the doctor. Ice is always good for starters. Definitely don't work-out for a week other than very light stretches.

![]() | Christ, I'm hoping to God its a muscle, not a nerve. I don't know if this is a clue as to which it is, but the pain is on the right hand side, not in the centre where the spine is, so I doubt its a disc, and its right at the bottom of the back, it feels like its in the hip. I can stand on my left leg no problem ,its only when I put weight on the right leg that it hurts. So it definately is a right sided problem. Does this sound like its more likely to be muscle not nerve? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | if it shoots down the leg towards the calf its prob nerve - it its centralised in one are, prob not... i buggered my back deadlifting prob 2 years ago now... doesn't hurt normally even when i'm lifting my heaviest deads and squats... it does hurt after about 60miles on the bike though - shoots through my glute, down my hamstring and through my calf in my right leg... it does sometimes hurt when i take time off from the gym... the stretching of the hams after some squats and deads though, i find actually help... a lot

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I would go to the doc's and have it checked out. I did lose my mobility for a bit. You can check out this site for possible information. exercises for back pain. If it was me, I'd take the vitamins, go to the doctor, and then stretch the muscles slowly ( per link - once you know from doctor what it is) as the pain will allow. Don't over do it.
