Torn bicep

Good morning everyone,

Last night at the gym my training partner tore his bicep!

After spending many hours at A&E he was told he needs to rest it for 6 weeks.

So i was wondering if any of you lot can offer any advise to help along the recovery?

Many thanks

Paulieb

Re: Torn bicep

was it the bicep tendon that seperated? if so are they going to reatach it or will he just be left with 20% of his former power in that arm?

alot of the time the docs will do nothing because it costs money to reatach a bicep. Your have to make some case that hes a athelete to stand a chance or go private but the longer you leave it the harder it is to reatach.

Re: Torn bicep

had this happen to me,

tore from the inside where it inserts into the elbow joint,

can be operated on but has to be done very quick with a few days of actually doing it ideally which you will never get on the NHS. If left for weeks it will be very difficult to reattach with going wrong or causing problems.

unfortunatly rest, ice, elevation etc is all he will be able to do for now, later he can get ultra sound and massage to strip out scar tissue.

if its is a proper tear though it will take time to repair and get back to full strength. I did mine 14 months ago now and is still not 100% or back to full strength.

Re: Torn bicep

Any sudden pop, tear, loss of mobility during weightlifting you should

1. Go NHS casualty department immediatly - you really have to make your claim for pain and loss of motion in order to get an orthopaedic surgeon to scan you with an ultrasound or put you forward for an mri scan - be persistant.

2. If the NHS waiting list is longer than 2 weeks for soft tissue tendon repair go private. A bicep tendon tear needs surgery within several days.

3. MRI scan privateltly can cost as little as £218 through Cobalt Appeal if they are in your area.

Private Orthopaedic consultant + ultrasound fees will amount to approx £200 for diagnosis.

YOU MUST ASK SURGEONS SECRETARY FOR IMMEDIATE APPOINTMENT AS YOU ARE IN ACUTE STAGES AND INJURY CANNOT WAIT. FAILING THAT WALK INTO THE CLINIC AND SHOW THEM YOUR INJURY AND ASK FOR APPOINTMENT. Might sound funny, but clearly visibly inury plus money are what really talks. Too many people wait too long to see a surgeon.

4. Get the surgery as soon as possible. After that rehab is referred to by your surgeon - you can avoid physiotherpay fees by simply going to surgeon once per week instead of physio 2-3 times per week.
THE SURGEONS KNOWS A LOT MORE THAN THE PHYSIO ANYWAY.
