Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

I hit the knuckle of my little finger on a bench today at school.

Straight away I was in lots of pain. After a few minutes it started swelling up a bit. All day I couldnt write or do anything with it. To make it worse I landed on it doing the high jump & my mate hit it my accident.

I had to do refereeing after school as well so it went really numb because it was freezing & also rained a bit.

Still swolen now even though I did it at about 10:30 this morning.

Was going to go to the hospital but the man in the chemist said as I can still move my fingers a bit it wouldnt be broken. Im not to sure though. My mate broke his & was fine for 2 weeks & could move alright & wasnt in to much pain. It was only that it was still swolen that he went & he had broken it.

Have some Ibuprofen & deepheat on it at the moment which is what the pharmasist reccomended.

Also Im not sure why but after I had a shower about 2 hours ago I was in the most amount of pain, even more than when I first did it.

If its still swollen & soar in the morning I think we are going for an X-ray.

Jusat wondering if you think it will affect me much in reguards to training & how long (if it is broken) should it take to heal?

Also in just over 24 hours Im suppost to be doing a 40 mile sponcered walk. Will I need to have it in a sling if it is broken all the way or not?

cheers
James

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

No doctor, but walk will be fine, no sling needed for broken metacarpel. I wouldnt weight train for at least 3-4 weeks though, even then see how it goes. Just rest and ice it up mate, if its really painful get an x-ray. Stick with iboprofen for the mo though for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Also, not 100% but i believe the bone you are talking about is the metacarpel, not metatarsall. The metatarsal is the same sort of bone but in the foot.

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

AH beat me to it reps for him, that was a metacarpel as he said. If its broken you will be in a sandwhich plaster for a few weeks, using a sling only initially whilst your hand is swelling, which it will do more in a hot shower for example.

You wont be able to do aything initially but as the swelling subsides you wil be able to do cardio, but without grip then only abs/core/machine training.

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

Its still hurting loads & the swelling hasnt gone down at all so mum wants me to get an X-ray.

Will i not even be able to do very light weights in the gym like 4kg or 5kg dumbells?

Just it would seem ages not doing anything for a month. Also I have paid for a month pass & only used it for 5 sessions up to now so 1/2 of the money will have been wasted.

SportDr, when you say I will need a sling for a few days if it is broken will this affect me tomorrow on the walk and will it cause blisters accross my chest?

cheers
James

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

it probably wont affect your walking, but after a while the sling will start rubbing on the back of your neck and will get a little sore, thats what happened to my neck when i broke my arm

SportDr, when you say I will need a sling for a few days if it is broken will this affect me tomorrow on the walk and will it cause blisters accross my chest? Blisters? no. As adam said it will hurt your neck so ask them for a collar & cuff type sling.

cheers
James

Cheers SD

J.M, only you - or the docs that x-ray it if you decide to go that far - know what you can do as far as exercise is concerned. Just dont push it mate as it will result in longer out of the gym.

Also, if your trying to gain mass. What would be the point in light dumbells? May as well rest IMO...could just use it as a de-load period, thats what i did after motorbike crash

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

Went this morning for an x-ray & they were going to leave it because I could move my finger.

But when we said I was doing ths walk today they didnt want it to get worse on it so they just gave me one to be on the safe side.

I have fractured my metacarpel. Its only strapped up for the walk tomorrow & they have given me a sling.

Got to go back in on monday to check if its alright & maybe get a cast put on.

Though about doing light dumbells just to keep the muscles working. I suppose the time off would be good & will give me time to work on my diet as well.

Re: Think I may have damaged/broke my 4th Metatarsal

Shame your not local to me mate, I do a wicked metacarpel slab that gives full range of movement to all your fingers, unfortunately you may end up with an Ulnar Gutter which is old school way to treat it.
