overtraining?

Before I start, I would like to say I am not in the bracket of people who think they are always overtraining their bodies. I just want some opinions.

I am currently doing the Bill Starr 5x5. I have been doing it for 6 weeks when I came down with a very bad cold. I have had this cold and bad chest for a week now which is very uncommon for me. I am in a job where I am constantly on my feet and on the move. Now I put this down to just bad timing as it has disruppted my routine just as I was starting to get very heavy (for me). Someone else suggested I may have overtrained and run my body down. I cant see how weightlifting 3 times a week could do this. What do you think?

Re: overtraining?

You could look into other reasons such as diet (eating enough), amount of sleep each night. Combined with heavy training it could lead you to be run down. Or you may just have a cold. Have a break from the gym for a week and see how you feel.

Re: overtraining?

I know it isnt my diet as I have that down. Maybe I do need more sleep, but I get my 8 hours each night. If I took the week off, would I just come back to the routine and repeat the week I was on. Its very annoying as I was really seeing some serious PB's and gains.

Re: overtraining?

Taking a week off shouldnt affect your Pbs and gains. There was a thread recently about a week off and many wrote they felt stronger after a weeks break.

Re: overtraining?

Yeah, I agree. Everytime I take a week off I come back better than ever. Its just I took a week off not to long ago and this was a special 9 week routine. Still, there isnt much I can do about it. Im just eating as much fruit and veg I can get my hands on. Will just have to grin and bear it I guess.

Re: overtraining?

Personally if i have a cold, i always carry on training, infact it motivates me, i feel powerful when i lift weights and that nothing can keep me down. You could say i enjoy having a cold lol. Mine dont really last long i put that down to a good diet and i supplement vitamin C every day. Perhaps you could try that i get my vitamin C tablets from sainsburys, 99p for 25 1000mg tablets!

Re: overtraining?

my mum works in sainsburys so I will be making that order tonight! Nice one foer that. I usually workout through a cold too but this seems slightly different. I worked out on the wednesday last week whilst feeling ill and it made me a lot worse which is why I had to be strict with myself and fall back a little!

Re: overtraining?

I eat quite alot of eggs, but i dont eat fish, so my main source of protein is powders yes. Unfortunately for me this is quite expensive as i tend to have about 5 or 6 shakes a day.

I am a vegan. Lots of protein in

tofu
beans
lentils
nuts
beansprouts
seeds
wholegrains

I do supplement with Soya Protein, but there are plenty of plant-based protein-rich foods out there.

Good luck with the Bill Starr. Hope you feel better soon. I train 5x5 too (but not quite as hard a you!!)
