Drop sets

The mentalist gym addict lad in my gym is always doing drop sets.

He is clearly on gear so can get away with it, but am I right in thinking you should only do drop sets now and again, and on stubborn muscle groups?

Re: Drop sets

Well my point of view on drop setting is, that when i train i only drop set the weight if i fail to meet the reps i aimed to do , shawn ray style , say i was doing dumbell curls , and i wanted to do 10 reps with the 25kgs but only got 7or8 , i would pick up the 20kg dumbells then aim for ten,
thats the only time i do drop sets,

but supersetting i usually do quite alot, but thats a different topic

Re: Drop sets

I once trained in a style that made the whole workout one entire dropset.

After a while i was using rest times as low as 10-15 secs. I would warm up then do heaviest set first. Then if reps were higher in the range i would stay at same weight but aim for lower in range on 2nd set. (5-8).

But if i was getting 5-6 reps i would drop down the weight slightly and continue to drop the weights like this throughout the workout.

I was even doing 15 sets of bent over rowing like this

I was training natty at the time and lost lots of fat and was in the shape of my life but at only around 9.5 stone! lol

The training must have worked because your ripped! For a natty thats a good bf% & muscle balance. You should listen to your friend more it looks like he knew how to get your ready!

Re: Drop sets

This lad is pretty lean but also chunky.

Which also makes me wonder what gear he must be on to stay lean all the time, but that's for the other forum I guess.

Thanks mate
As you can see from the date on pic it was a few years back. I took a break from that training and never got back to it :( I just tried resting 2 mins and low volume training. Gained size but look nowhere near that now. Between then and now i took a break and now back at it but at a higher bf% and probably 20lbs heavier.

That training was using 3 days on 2 off then repeat.
Chest/shoulders/tri's
Quads/hams/calves
Back/biceps/abs
10 sets for smaller muscles and 15 sets for larger and using a bench and weights in my house.
No cardio just a low cal diet, but the whole workout was cardio in itself TBH

Are you sure he is on gear tho mate?

The guy that was giving me routines and guidance back at my most ripped was a guy called Rob Thoburn. He built himself up using the methods he asked me to try, and he is pretty big and stays lean all year round. Idiots on BB.com questioned if he was natty because they couldn't accept how he had transformed his body over the years. But it didn't happen overnight!

What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another

This thread has again stirred up thoughts of returning to this method. I might drop around 6-10lbs but i'd look damn good! lol

Re: Drop sets

I just dug out an old thread about the workouts being like one whole dropset for anybody thats interested
http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=152496

Theres also links within that thread at places like avantlabs that are worth reading.

I'm now leaning towards getting back to getting lean and building a bit more muscle. From that pic i posted i reckon i could be as lean as that but at at least 10lbs heavier, maybe even 15lbs. I'll update you in 20 weeks time as this is how long it took me to do it before from around the same bf%

Yeah I'm pretty confident he's on gear. He's very lean but pretty big with it. He does about 6 different exercises just for biceps, and is always in the gym as a typical gear user full of enthusiasm would be.

He never does cardio either yet is always ripped - about as ripped as you in that pic but about twice the thickness.

I should just go and ask him really

Re: Drop sets

As someone who's had plenty of accusations since the age of 15,i think you shouldnt care whether he is on gear or not, just simply try the routine,if it dont work foou, dont do it.

Even now having had a few years off from intense training due to lower back injury and then a bike accident,i get people who're very surprised i dont take anything and when i tell them that i never have done, they look at me quite incredulous really.

As for drop sets, have done them, have got gained from doing them but find i go into overtraining/tired state after a while(maybe a month?).

Easiest way to add some into your existing workouts and see how things go.
