cardio and gaining weight

hey guys im currently on a routine to gain weight well gain lean muscle.
well im wondering about my cardio, on a tue i do sprint training and that leaves thurs for cardio but should i be doing low intensity cardio to burn fat whilst bulking ? or would this just burn energy and slow muscle gain?

i was thinking i could just do high intensity and work on fitness if tere is no point in it while bulking. just dont want to do it if it aint goingto burn fat .

would like your veiws thanx guys warren

Re: cardio and gaining weight

slow cardio is what i do, i still do loads when bulking, think about it in general you only ever see fat people doing cardio and thats all they ever do, if it doesnt work for them it will be ok for you!!! if your diet is spot on you can do plenty of cardio

Re: cardio and gaining weight

Well look at rugby players or american football players they do tons of cardio and still gain great i say just address your diet.
Also if your gaining leanly dont expect the scales to jump too much i mean i would be happy with 2lb per month as long as your gaining size.

Re: cardio and gaining weight

jimmy who is a MOD on this board plays American football and is very good at it maybe you could drop him a PM for advice on the fitness side of things...

as for cardio whilst bulking i did not used to do it at all due to the myth of it would stop the gains this i know as b0llocks, for the last 5yrs i have done 3 x 30min cardio sessions on a treadmill per week and it has helped with both gaining muscle and keeping me cardio vascular fit.

Re: cardio and gaining weight

i noticed on a diffrent thread you had advised incline treadmill at 3mph so ill give that a go. 3 times per week? well like i said i sprint on tuesdays and every other friday i drop my legs training and do sprint work instead.

my routine is as follows

mon- chest and tris
tue - sprints
wed-back and bis
thurs- cardio
fri- legs and shoulders
sat - off
sun - off

im not too worried about over training as i dont actually do anything other than train eat and sleep.

im meant to be at uni but since xmass iv been off due to my neice being ill so i redo this year in sept. so i have like 7 months off now.

i get 8-9 hours kip per night, but i dont know when i could fit cardio in ? is what im doing enough would you think? cardio wise it will be

tue - sprint work which consists of polymetric exersices then 40yard sprints till i hit my aim 5 times.

thurs 45 min walk on 5% gradient 3mph

every other fri same as tue.

cheers mate

Re: cardio and gaining weight

i greatly support high intensity training. Its fantastic to burn fat and it does not burn muscle..(well all cardio burns muscle but it dosent burn "extra").

I would go 20 minutes a week thats all you need.

Of course that is for me...everyone has a different body and genes so it depends on how easy you gain fat. If you gain fat and weight easily i would say 1-2 a week.

I do 3 minutes on 8km then 2 min on 12km....repeat 4 times overall. 2% incline

Re: cardio and gaining weight

hi , well today i did 45mins on treadmill at 5% grad and 6kph and it wernt to bad i felt just out of breath enough so i couldnt quite talk in full sentances but not so i was out o breath all the time. and i was sweating my tits off lol it felt good.

i think i have good genes, my dad, although a bit obver weight now is still in decent shape for his age, especially considering e doesnt go to the gym ( he has a disease so he loses his balance all the time) also shattered knees lol. but he use to be a county player for football, and cricket and says he was in top sape till arounf 40 when his knees went.

my mam is slim but does alot of walking. so i figure they arnt bad parents to inherit from lol.

this is not true if you are dieting and on restricted calories HIT training burns more muscle than performing cardio at a medium level of intensity for a longer period this has been proved many many times with competing bodybuilders....

i myself have tried both methods and the medium intensity is much better for losing fat and holding muscle IMO

Out of intrest Paul how do you measure your body fat?
I have had the calipers measurment done many times and it always comes out way too low compared to my actual bf % are they just not doing it right or do you need to do the under water weighing?
