Re: squatting?

Barbell.

The fact the BB might have some wobble will work your stabilising muscles.

Machine squat only if you need to IMHO.

Re: squatting?

Just to highlight an example - you can Press different (read: cascading lower) weights when using a Machine, a Barbell and Dumbells.

This is due to the stabilising muscles involved.

Tis why I like DB Bench Press

Not all squats are equal and squats don't just work your legs...

Smith Squat isn't the same as a Barbell Back Squat...

A Front Squat isn't the same as a Barbell Back Squat...

etc etc etc

Re: squatting?

yes but the movement is still the same though? with barbell your lower back takes a lot of the strain but with machine you just get direct pressure, less strain on the rest of the body, although free bar squats are the daddy :-), i prefer leg press myself

Hmm depends on squatting stance.

For example - Smith Squatting is an up-down movement, which I imagine machine squats would be similar.

How come you prefer leg press?

Re: squatting?

i tend to feel it better on my legs thats all, i do squats also but i have a dodgy knee so i have to be careful when squatting so i tend to do machine squats purely for the safety point of view, i think they all have a place in your training and no one is better than another

Re: squatting?

personally i think that you can feel if your are built for any exercise the first time you try it ,if it feels wrong listen to your body and bin it.if it feels right ,works the intended muscle be that free weights, machines or cables then go for it. all that matters are results. but thats just my opinion

Highly disagree with that IMO. The 1st time you try an exercise you should be figuring out the correct form required etc. No one became a good squatter/ deadlifter etc in one session! Only if an exercise is causing injury should it be discarded from your repetoire. Squatting doesn't feel great to me, why would it cos there's a heavy ar$e weight trying to crush me into the ground, but my form is solid and it doesn't cause injury therefore it is at the top of my list of exercises to do.

Correct barbell squats utilize far more muscles\stabalizing muscles than just the leg ones.
The machine shown i would say is more akin to a leg press, however both have there place in a muscular develoment routine
