Stick to the compound movements like Bench press, squats, deadlifts... these are the bread and butter for power and strength.. build a routine around those.. keep the reps low and in good form... 4-8 is good for strength... even lower when you become more experienced with the routine... sets keep to 3 with intensity... there are also other routines out there but at first use the kiss principle... Keep It Simple Stupid... something I still do today..

I agree with Greyphantom on the compound exercises. If you can help it use free weights too. Dont neglect the abs for core strength either, you need those for support for the back as well.
