No with the bar you are forced to lean slightly foreward to do the exercise. Going heavy can put a strain on your lower back.
Using dumbbells your arms are at their sides evenly distributing the weight so there will be less strain on your lower back.
But if you want you can do both and alternate between every other week.

hi mate, ive tried al sorts and found what works best for me. i sugest you try the different types and find what works best for you...

I used to really like behind the back barbell shrugs, but i went to 4 plates a side and knackered my quad from straining.

I now alternate dumbell shrugs and front barbell shrugs changing them every 6 weeks.

When i do front barbell shrugs, I do them in more of a powerlifting style, of pulling the bar up and back as opposed to bodybuilding style of pulling the bar up. Its a bit hard a explain without showing you, but im sure you'll get it.

I used to do front barbell and rear barbell shrugs, but have recently switched to dumbell shrugs as the front barbell shrugs were straining my back a bit like hackskii said.

I am finding the dumbell shrugs good except picking them up! I have also stoped using my straps which means I can't get as many reps with the 62.5 kg's but it gives my grip a good workout also.

I only do them every other week as my traps are probably my best body part.

Man, that is good weight T

I did find myself for me I had to go heavy to do anything for the traps. That is just me tho. Lighter weights just did not seem to do anything.
