excercise to lose fat

Hi all, this is for me and the missus.I heard that low intensity excercises are best like walking is this true and for how long ie;do we need to walk for 30mins or what for best results.Also cycling is it best to just go at a steady to slow pace?

any tips or suggestions(we aren't gym members)
