In an effort to preserve homeostasis, when levels of a hormone are high, receptors reduce in number so the hormone's actions are expressed less so. One theory as to why gains slow after a long time on. If they increased it would be an example of positive feedback, where the body strives to deviate further away from baseline. Which in this case we kow doesnt happen.
When levels of a hormone are low, receptor number increases, again in an effort to express it's actions to the required extent. One reason why a long time off gear brings about awesome gains when you eventually go back on.
