Get Vick's First Defense, and follow the instructions (don't just use it once).

Works a treat if you catch the cold early enough. (Sore throat is one of the first signs of some colds)

Also there are throat numbing sprays and bronchial mixes which make it SO much less painful.

I know I can deal with a lot of cold symptoms, but sore throat is not one of them.
