Yes, hit some resistance training. This burns more cal's than aerobics. Remember the bigger your chest and shoulders are the smaller the waist looks. If you had some big shoulders who cares what the waist looks like, you only will be able to see it (waist) if you dont have a shirt on. Your strength will be up with the weight up. Now is prime, you will see good results and this will keep you in the gym. I would hit the big muscle groups like legs, chest, shoulders and back. Forget about the abs until the waist goes down. Remember these are muscles too and they will build as well. Start out slow and do maybe one or two sets to FAILURE per body part. Take it from there how you feel.
You will build faster than a guy that has never hit the gym as muscle has memory. Start slow and dont do too much. You can go in and do 2 sets per body part to failure and work the whole body. Wait 3 days and do this again.
