Yes, this allows the person to be more susceptible to your ridicule.
My ex boss (bitch), used to do stuff like this at work. She would ask me how my daughter was, and then when I was all loosened up she would ask me to do some extra work.
Only reason I got upset was the fact I never saw it coming, almost put her smarter than me.
So, I tried it on her and it worked both ways.
Every time I talked to her from then on, I was waiting for her to do something deceptive to me.
This little trick of a kind word in the beginning of the conversation allows one to be more receptive to your words.
