Yeah, I think when the light goes red it means you've killed it (or someone else has). Its a known problem and I believe Microsoft replace/fix it for you. The only thing is I'm not sure how it affects you with it being pre-owned - I guess it depends if you have the original documents that came with it. I'd take it back to the shop, they should refund you. If they dont, and I'd be very surprised if that were the case, then I'd try Microsoft.
