Re: Smith machine close grip press(no bench)

It's called a floor press.

Fairly common amongs powerlifters wishing to improve their top end (lockout) strength, especially those that compete using a bench shirt and find the mid-range to lockout to be the sticking point. Also fairly common with throwers and the like. Typically you'd do em with the free bar set low in a power rack, or with DB's. Similar movements would be board presses, foam presses and rack lockouts.

I see these somewhat specialist exercises feeding down , often from people who know and understand their uses to people who "saw a big guy in the gym doing it" and copy them without knowing what they are doing or why. Good call on asking "what's that" before you try it
