Melanotan is on a distinguished road
Re: Melanotan 2

Hello, this is Scott Stevenson the admin from Melanotan.org.

While it is true that people should not take lightly the potential risks of using an unapproved (for medical/cosmetic uses) peptide like Melanotan II I'd just like to clarify something here:
There has only been one person who's claimed that Melanotan II could possibly be the cause for eye problems that he experienced.
His user name was Robbie and the warning post he made on July 8th, 2007 is here. As one can see the last time that Robbie was logged onto the site was July 10, 2007.

If one reads his thread they will see that a good number of long term Melanotan II users subsequently went and had their eyes checked by opthamologists and not one came back to report that they had any diagnosed eye problems. Since then there have not been other reports from people contending that Melanotan II caused them vision problems.
It turns out that what Robbie reported he was experiencing was CSR (Central Serous Retinopathy). After research by one of our moderators (Pseudonym) it was determined that occurrences of CSR are relatively common (especially for males between the age of 20 to 50). Georgia Retina a medical group specializing in eye care reports:
Quote:
Central serous retinopathy (also called choroidopathy) is a relatively common condition in which a "blister" of fluid forms under the retina (serous retinal detachment).
and
Quote:
Treatment is usually not necessary because nearly 90% of individuals spontaneously recover 20/30 (ie: typical) vision or better.
...
The cause of CSR is unknown. Individuals with "hard-driving, type-A personalities" are more prone to develop this condition. On that basis, stress has been suggested as a causative factor, although never proven.
What is likely the case in this instance is that Robbie was taking Melanotan II and subsequently experienced CSR (a natural occurrence of it) and then supposed Melanotan II was the cause.
This type of reasoning is a logical fallacy (ie: "A occurred, then B occurred. Therefore, A caused B."
Hope this helps folks have a better understanding of what's been reported relative to risks to vision from Melanotan II.

Thanks,

-Scott
