As I continue the leg press it feels like a burning sort of pain and is bloody uncomfortable to say the least. It's not painfull enough to make me stop but I guess most people who don't work out would probably stop.

Anyway, I've had this for probably 3 years now and I even stopped doing leg press for nearly 12 months. As soon as I started again with leg press it comes back.

Anyone heard of or experienced anything similar ?

I've booked an appointment at the quack's this time so I'll see what he's got to say.

I guess not doing leg press at all is an option but I'd rather get it sorted if I can. I cannot feel it at all doing squats or any other leg work.
Sounds like where the origin of the piriformis sits. You may be stretching the sciatic nerve a bit too much. Just reduce your ROM to the point where you bring the weight down to just beyond 90 degrees at the knee. Bringing the knees to the chest offers no more stimulation on the quads, it just compromises the back, as when going this far down there is usually quite a pronounced pelvic tilt that has to be brought back into line before the quads kick in. This is where the danger to the back lies.
