HMRC is getting rid of the 10% band from April 2008 and the basic rate will be 20%.

NIC's are another story though - essentially everyone pays 11% up to the higher earnings point, and above that you pay 1%. You can also make voluntary contributions (Class D) if you have a shortfall. If you call HMRC they'll tell you if you have a shortfall, as not having enough NIC's can affect your state pension entitlement.
