The board does have the capability to resize images automatically if the imagemagick libraries are installed on the server and picture were uploaded to the server itself. The big problem with that is overhead on the server. It takes a huge amount of bandwidth, increasing the cost of operating the board, as well as using up huge chunks of hard drive space.

I used to run an adult dvd site with the same software as here and we hosted the cover images as well... traffic was about 1 terrabyte a month, and the hard drives were a raid array of 3x300Gb drives. We were always having to drop older stuff just to make space. backups of the board used to take a full 8 hours to complete or if it was a backup to my own server at home it used to take a full 24 hours on my 10Mb connection.

The answer is yes, it could be done... the probability though is not because of the costs involved.
