| Re: Flaming of Newbies I don't totally disagree Tom but I don't totally agree either, in the context you have put it you are correct, a well meaning noob, with an interest in gear, who is showing responsibility by asking does not deserve outright flaming, but in itself some of the comments you mentioned are actually good advice, they ARE too young, it IS too soon and they SHOULD research it. This advice whilst bluntly put is golden IMHO.
The well meaning noob you have portrayed does deserve more than that I agree and the posts I have seen were always balanced, some people being blunt, others explaining why, overall they got a solid balanced answer, that is the nature of a forum as is the freedom of speach.
The fact is a lot of the posts asking about gear are not so well meaning, treating us like a bunch of drugged up meatheads who 'of course' are just gonna hook them up with a heavy duty course and a dealer to boot praising ourselves for creating another convert in the process. These people do not show respect to the sport or the board and its members and get what is coming to them, again IMHO.
I don't do the flaming, so I dont need to post this to cover my ****. I try to steer people onto a healthier path with balanced advice, that being, you ARE too young AND why that matters. To go into too much detail would be preaching so sometimes blunt is best. What matters is, they dont have to look far to see other posts from me helping them with attaining there goals naturally balancing my approach.
My point is, that you may not like the responses, but people answering from their hearts or their experience should not be told what they can or cannot reply, within reason, and whilst some may give blunt answers because its the 30th 'I am 18 and a hardgainer how can I sidestep any hard work by using gear?' post that week, there are others that take the time to balance the responses overall, the moderators should trust the community to do the right thing and this sticky is just one step closer to our democracy becoming a Dictatorship, is that what we are all about?
