every time he did my back a week later the work would be undone by the glute moving upwards slightly...

i sacked this and concentrated on 'ATF' squats - and i mean ass to floor! it stretched out the glute and hamstring...

i also addded SLDLs (done properly!) against the advice of my chiropractor and my back has had no pain since (this was about a year ago)

i'd think about exercises that stretch out the posterior chain ;)
Did you also get a pain around your groin? This sounds pretty much identical to what I did. Also did it deadlifting. I'm 99% certain it was due to form. Squatting down and hugging my knees helps as well as squatting with weight. Laying down and pulling your knees up slightly also works.

How long did it take to heal? Did you take anything for it? I've had mine roughly 4-5 months. It's painful when I'm sat for a long peroid. I've seen a Chrioprator a few times and have had some re-adjustment done.

A point on the core stability - this would help prevent future injury, not really cure a current injury. Injuries of this nature are caused by poor form or an imbalance. Core stability would, in theory, even out that imbalance.
