Huer my back, need advice?

I have just had to abort tonights workout. My first excercise as always on Mondays is straight leg deadlifts. Until today I have always done them using DBs, but today I changed to a barbell (using the same amount of weight). The first set was fine, but on the second I felt a sharp sudden pain in my lower back and I cannot put any weight at all on my right leg because when I try it hurts like hell on the right side of my lower back.
Is this muscle or nerve damage, and should I put an ice pack on it immediately?
Could switching to a barbell have anything to do with it.
