basically the 3 main food groups are protein/carbohydrate/fats

in short protein is absorbed and is used to repair muscle.

carbohydrates are like an energy source for your body, theres ffast acting carbs e.g. sugar (in things like coke, sweets, white bread, white rice) etc which can get into the blood stream really quick,
then theres more complex carbs such as oats in porage and brown rice(i think) and like baked potatoe etc. complex carbs are slower to absorb which gives you more energy throughout the day( i guess thats why a lot of breakfast cerials are made from complex carbs like the porage and weetabix etc) so that it can maintain u for quite a long time. IF you look on a packet of anything like say a mars bar it will probs have 'carbohydrate 20g' then under 'of which sugars 18g' for example. so virtually all of the carbs in them are fast acting carbs (ie most junk food is)

if you eat carbs and dont use them (ie dont burn them off in some form or another) then they will probably be stored as fats in your body. thats why eating fast acting carbs makes u put on fat. One time a lot of ppl eat sugary carb sources is strate after a workout, if you have an intense workout and all your carbs are burned up your body might start breaking down your muscle to get its energy. so if u have something sugary then its proabbly the best time/most useful time to eat simple carbs.

Fats are also important in ya diet but im not all that clued up on them. all i go by is dont eat much saturated fat coz its the worst but things like olive oil (which is a fat) can be beneficial. there are others who know loads on fats.

sorry for the long winded simpletons approach (and please correct where im wrong anyone)to my answer but im not all that experienced thats just how i understand it so thought it might be of help rather than a mega complex answer.
