| Why do guys get sterile during a cycle? Why do anabolic androgenic steroids cause a person to be sterile
during a cycle?
The hypothalamus releases a substance called gonadotropin releasing
hormone (GnRH), which is carried to the nearby pituitary gland.
The arrival of GnRH in the pituitary serves as a signal to release
two hormones luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone
(FSH) into general circulation.
When LH reaches the Leydig cells of the testes, it basically tells
the testicles to make testosterone which goes into the blood stream.
The production of sperm in the testes is closely tied to this
hormonal cycle.
FSH released from the pituitary binds to specific receptors
in another part of the testes called the Sertoli cells, which are
located in the seminiferous tubles, the structure that comprises about
80 to 90% of the mass in the testicles. By stimulating the production
of protein that binds androgens, FSH promotes a higher concentration
of testosterone in this region, which stimulates the maturation of
sperm cells (spermatogenesis). Each day from puberty to death, the
testes produce about 30 million new sperm.
When one adds exogenous (external) testosterone, the body through a
complex hormonal system, regulates itself via a negative feedback
loop.
When excess estradiol and to some extent DHT reach the hypothalamus
they inhibit the release of GnRH initiating the classic negative
feedback loop.
I am sure that the body realizes that there is too much testosterone
too and I am sure this is part of the negative feed back and even
suspect blocking DHT and estrogen there would still be some shutdown.
So LH and FSH won't make it to their target cells (Leydig and Sertoli
cells) to the response is testicular atrophy.
What I think is interesting is I get massive testicular atrophy and
thought this was from the nuts not producing testosterone, and this
may be true but if 80 to 90% of the mass in the testicles are Sertoli
cells and stimulated by FSH (which is the mechanism for sperm
production) then actually it is the shutdown of sperm I am guessing that is
what I am noticing (size diffrence).
So if the nuts don't produce testosterone due to shutdown of LH and
the pituitary gland does not send out FSH due to shutdown there is no
testosterone in the testicles to produce any sperm.
This is why I think guys on gear are temporarily sterile.
