It's only normal NHS procedure that you have to be referred to an NHS specialist through your GP.
You can approach any physician or consultant for a private consultation.
And actually, you
can contact an NHS consultant directly. When you're asked why, you can complain that your GP won't refer you and ask for a private or NHS consultation.
Often a consultant will see you and then continue to treat you on the NHS.
